What is Osteopathy?

Osteopaths enhance the quality of life and optimise functional abilities by promoting healthy lifestyles and implementing strategies grounded in the latest evidence-based research. Our practice is dedicated to alleviating limitations in activity by addressing both the acute and chronic conditions that can affect individuals at any stage of life.

We delve into the biomechanical, psychological, and social dimensions of health to develop tailored interventions. These may include targeted manual therapies, customized rehabilitative exercises, practical lifestyle adjustments, and comprehensive pain education, all aimed at empowering you to achieve your best health outcomes.

By focusing on a holistic approach, osteopathy not only treats specific ailments but also contributes to your overall well-being and prevents future health challenges.

What Might an Initial Appointment Involve?

Your initial appointment is crucial for understanding and addressing your presenting complaint. To effectively assist you, it's important that I gather detailed information about:

  • The location and nature of your pain or discomfort (sharp, dull, achy, stiff, weak, tingling, etc.)

  • Any specific incidents or activities that triggered your symptoms

  • Factors that alleviate or exacerbate your condition

  • The duration of the complaint and whether it's a recurring issue

Although you will have completed an intake form with some of this information prior to your arrival, I will delve deeper during our consultation to ensure no detail is overlooked.

Following our discussion, we'll proceed with a thorough assessment. Based on this evaluation, we will determine the most appropriate treatment plan to address your needs, which may include manual therapy and other interventions as suited to your condition.

What about Follow-ups?

At your follow-up visit, we will continue with the management plan established during your initial appointment, focusing on the same health concern.

I will start by asking questions to assess your progress since our last meeting. This will include how you have responded to the initial treatment, your experience with any prescribed exercises or self-management techniques, and your overall thoughts on your current condition.

Based on your feedback and my assessment, we will proceed with the next steps tailored to your needs. This may include further manual therapy, adjustments to your exercise regimen, or if necessary, arranging additional follow-ups or referrals to other healthcare professionals for issues outside my expertise.

The Assessment Process

This is another very important part of the consultation. A thorough assessment allows me to understand the health and function of various systems and regions of the body, what may be contributing to your complaint, as well as what is likely not related or involved. An assessment may include any or all of the following:

  • Movement assessment (Asking you to move the area thorough various ranges of motion to understand any pain involved and your available range of motion).

  • Palpation (Pressing and feeling around the area of concern to examine for tenderness, swelling, heat, tissue texture and quality).

  • Neurological examination (To assess for any sensory or motor changes, such as numbness, sensitivity, weakness, inability to perform certain tasks)

  • Systems examination (Assessing your abdomen, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, and even skin, to look for signs of involvement of the organs involved).

After a thorough assessment I have a significantly better understanding of what may or may not be contributing to your complaint, as well as whether treatment and management from me is your best course of action, or if it is more appropriate for me to refer you for further imaging or to another health care provider for a specific intervention.

Personalised Treatment Plan

After a thorough assessment, I will discuss the key factors contributing to your condition and outline the most effective strategies to achieve your health goals. Together, we will develop a management plan that aligns with your unique needs, considering your time, lifestyle, budget, and physical capabilities.

This personalised approach ensures that we design a treatment strategy that not only addresses your specific complaints but also sets a clear path towards achieving your desired health outcomes. By tailoring our plan to your individual circumstances, we maximise the potential for a successful recovery and lasting well-being.

Ongoing Care and Lifestyle Integration

Effective management of your health may require ongoing care, particularly when your work or lifestyle directly impacts your condition. Together, we will craft a dynamic treatment plan that not only addresses your immediate health concerns but also promotes your sustained well-being. Our collaborative approach ensures that this plan integrates seamlessly with your daily routine, enhancing its effectiveness and sustainability.

Our goal is to help you maintain optimal health consistently or to progress steadily towards the healthiest version of yourself. To achieve this, we'll focus on lifestyle integration, tailoring interventions that fit naturally into your life. This may involve ergonomic assessments at your workplace, personalised exercise programs that enhance both physical and mental health, nutritional guidance to support your body’s needs, and stress management techniques that align with your personal and professional commitments.

By embedding these health strategies into your routine, we empower you with the tools to take control of your health, ensuring that improvements are practical, attainable, and aligned with your long-term goals.
